What is Russell 1000 Index?

The Russell 1000 Index, is a stock market index tracking 1,000 largest stocks in the Russell 3000 Index. It is maintained by FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.

The value of Russell 1000 index is calculated using the capitalization-weighted method, which can be described as:

Index Value = (1/Divisor) ∑ (Stock Weight) * (Stock Price)

where: 
  Index Value = 100.00, originally in 1984; 3,357.35, now in 2025 
  Stock Weight = (Market Cap) / ∑ (Market Cap)

The Russell 1000 index was launched on Jan 1, 1984, with a fixed value of 100, by adjusting the divisor.

On Feb 14, 2025, the index value reached 3,357.35, representing approximately 93% of the US equity market. Example stocks in the index are:
