The Russell 2000 Index, is a stock market index tracking 2,000 smallest stocks in the Russell 3000 Index. It is commonly referred as the "small-cap" index.

The Russell 2000 Index is maintained by FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.

The value of Russell 2000 index is calculated using the capitalization-weighted method, which can be described as:

Index Value = (1/Divisor) ∑ (Stock Weight) * (Stock Price)

where: 
  Index Value = 100.00, originally in 1984; 2,279.98, now in 2025 
  Stock Weight = (Market Cap) / ∑ (Market Cap)

The Russell 2000 index was launched on Jan 1, 1984, with a fixed value of 100, by adjusting the divisor.
