What is NASDAQ Composite Index?

The NASDAQ Composite, is a stock market index tracking all stocks listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. It includes US and non-US company stocks.

The value of NASDAQ Composite index is calculated using the capitalization-weighted method, which can be described as:

Index Value = (1/Divisor) ∑ (Stock Weight) * (Stock Price)

where: 
  Index Value = 100.00, originally in 1971; 19,627.44, now in 2025 
  Divisor = 1,628,961,807, now in 2025
  Stock Weight = (Market Cap) / ∑ (Market Cap)

The NASDAQ Composite was launched on Feb 5, 1971, when the NASDAQ stock market was established with 50 stocks. The index value started with a fixed value of 100, by adjusting the divisor.

On Jan 31, 2025, the index value reached 19,627.44 with 3,272 stocks and the divisor value of 1,628,961,807.
