How to convert CUSIP to ISIN?

A North American financial security is assigned 2 identification codes: CUSIP (Committee on Uniform Security Identification Procedures) code and ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) code.

To Convert CUSIP to ISIN, you can follow these steps:

• Prefix the CUSIP code with "US", if it's a United States security to form the ISIN-11 code. Or prefix with "CA", if it's a Canada security.
• Append the ISIN checksum to the ISIN-11 code. See the next tutorial on how to generate ISIN checksum.

For example, the CUSIP code for the Common Stock of Apple Inc. in United States is 037833100. Its ISIN code is US0378331005 and constructed as:

To Convert ISIN to CUSIP, you can follow these steps:

• Remove the ISIN checksum appendix from the ISIN code to form the ISIN-11 code.
• Remove the country code prefix from the ISIN-11 code to form the CUSIP code.

For example, the ISIN code for the Common Stock of Apple Inc. in United States is US0378331005. Its CUSIP code is 037833100 and constructed as:

Note that CUSIP codes with the special characters '*', '@' and '#' can not be converted from ISIN codes. '*', '@' and '#' are used in CUSIP codes for private placement numbers (PPNs) for the insurance industry.
